Past Projects

Depot Park

Our first major project was the community wide effort to return the train depot, which was a big part of Upland’s history. Because of the many gifts given, the depot now sits in the Depot Park. The names of people who gave to the project are listed on plaques representing The Depot Society (gifts of $1,000 or above), The Conductors Club (gifts between $500 and $999), and we hope to be able to continue in succeeding in many more community projects. The Engineers Club (gifts between $100 and $499). Engraved bricks are also found around the depot.

Jefferson Twp Schools Memorial Park

The concept for the Jefferson Twp Schools Memorial Park at the corner of Main and Jefferson began during preparation for a 40th year class of 1965 reunion. When passing the lot that was once the site of the school, Debby Greenlee Ribble said,”Wouldn’t it be fun to have a memorial park where the school once stood?” Along with Debby, Ruth Anderson Howard, Jim and LaRea Lawvere Slater formed a core committee to begin work in 2005. A larger group of 16 people met periodically to continue to plan the park.

The Upland Area Historical Society became the sponsor and fund-raising began. The Community Foundation for Grant County contributed $11,000 for the Main Street entrance and alumni purchased benches, lamps, pergola and trees. A time capsule, flagpole and flag were also donated by graduates.

All Matthews, Upland, and Jefferson Twp High School graduates appear on two walls in the park. Many graduates also purchased bricks with their names for walkways through the park.

Besides graduates, organizations and businesses have contributed to the park to reach a total of $70,000. Work continues on the park to complete the bell tower from the old Upland High School, signage and commemorative donor plaques.
